Wild Minds Weekly: Which mistake do you want to make?

Hello friends,

Mistakes are an unavoidable fact of life.

If you arrive at your grave having never made a mistake then you have undoubtedly led a very bland life. To be human is to make mistakes.

But not all mistakes are equal.

So, which ones should you be making?

There are two types.

1. Mistakes of Ambition

Mistakes of Ambition are the ones you make when you act to improve your situation. These are the mistakes you make when you have incomplete information (because having all the information is impossible), but choose to act anyway. These are the mistakes that might cost you time or money, but gain you experience. You fail forward.

Imagine you, like many people, want to improve your health. So you stop eating junk food and start eating healthy. Except at the time, ‘healthy’ to you means grains, supplements, and being plant-based (as the processed food companies would have you believe).

Incomplete information. You find that you don’t feel any different, your autoimmune condition is still eating away at you, your skin is looking worse and your nails are breaking. Mistake. So you go in search of more complete information…

Then 2 years later, you’re off-grid, on a farm, with 7 different types of animals.

Every mistake of ambition is a possible success.

2. Mistakes of Sloth

Then we have Mistakes of Sloth. These are the mistakes of inaction.

What do I mean?

I mean refusing to change a bad situation out of fear of uncertainty, rejection, or of trading your ‘good’ situation for a great one. We make these despite having all the facts (the reality of the current situation we’re in).

Sure, you may regret a mistake of ambition. But you will regret a mistake of sloth.

Just to go back to the health example, to make a mistake of sloth would have been simple. It would have just meant never trying to improve your situation in the first place, just carrying on as you are hoping at some point things change.

Most people are scared to make mistakes of ambition, so they make mistakes of sloth instead.

Which one do you want to make?

The choice is yours.
