Wild Minds Weekly: This is keeping you stuck
Hello friends,
We all start in our version of The Truman Show.
The Truman Show follows Truman Burbank, a character who, unknown to him, is living his whole life in a giant TV studio.
The island he lives on? A set. His friends, his wife, his parents? Paid actors. His insurance job? Meaningless. His high-school graduation? Staged. The producers keep him under constant surveillance and direct every aspect of his life to steer him in a certain direction.
At 30, heâs been conditioned since birth to never desire more than his make-believe town, Seahaven. He had no reason to doubt the idyllic life curated for him by the showâs producers.
But he was unfulfilled.
He had a deep desire for something more than his scripted existence.
âHow has he not realised that heâs been living in a fake world for 30 years?â
The answer is simple.
Heâs ruled by fear and insecurity.
Everything in his environment is designed to shape his beliefs and keep him trapped. The radio he listens to on the way to work, the posters he walks past every day, his family and friends, all prime him to believe that the world is scary, and leaving Seahaven and venturing into the unknown means certain death.
Like all of us, he is held back by fear of failure, fear of what others will think, fear of the unknown. He is chained by both his attachment to comfort and the conditioned belief that seeking anything different is a dangerous idea.
As he starts to wake up to the nature of his existence, he experiences paranoia and loneliness because the people around him (paid actors) wonât acknowledge the truth of the world they live in.
Now, to be clear, I'm not saying that your family and friends are conspiring to keep you in a fake reality. Instead, I'm saying:
We too easily accept the narrative weâre given because it feels safe.
Everything from the messaging you see on TV and billboards, to what you get told in school, to the online echo-chamber that social media creates for you, to the opinions and beliefs of the people around you (even if well-meaning) all influence your perception of reality and direct you down the âsafeâ path.
But âsafeâ means the one thatâs most predictable and easiest to control.
âWork hard in school, so you can get a job that pays you well enough to afford all the things youâre told you need to buy, and donât worry about the rest.â
And what does it cost?
Time.
Iâve seen a lot of people trade far too much of their life for far more stuff than they could ever need.
How much longer do you want to spend your most valuable resources, your time, energy, and attention, chasing a life that doesnât fulfil you?
Like Truman, thereâs only one way to free yourself.
When Truman finally tries to escape, the producers unleash a storm to sink his boat. He doesnât turn back. His boat capsizes. He nearly drowns. But when his hand finally touches the edge of the world, he finds the door. He looks into the camera, takes a bow, and walks through.
The only way out is through the storm, and out into the unknown.
Step through the door.
You donât need to know where it will lead. You need to start walking and trust in your ability to figure it out - only then can you start living a life that you choose, rather than one that was assigned to you.
Work that excites you. Relationships built on truth, not performance. Days that feel like yours. Thatâs whatâs waiting for you on the other side.
To your freedom,
Rob
