Wild Minds Weekly: This is keeping you stuck

Hello friends,

We all start in our version of The Truman Show.

The Truman Show follows Truman Burbank, a character who, unknown to him, is living his whole life in a giant TV studio.

The island he lives on? A set. His friends, his wife, his parents? Paid actors. His insurance job? Meaningless. His high-school graduation? Staged. The producers keep him under constant surveillance and direct every aspect of his life to steer him in a certain direction.

At 30, he’s been conditioned since birth to never desire more than his make-believe town, Seahaven. He had no reason to doubt the idyllic life curated for him by the show’s producers.

But he was unfulfilled.

He had a deep desire for something more than his scripted existence.

“How has he not realised that he’s been living in a fake world for 30 years?”

The answer is simple.

He’s ruled by fear and insecurity.

Everything in his environment is designed to shape his beliefs and keep him trapped. The radio he listens to on the way to work, the posters he walks past every day, his family and friends, all prime him to believe that the world is scary, and leaving Seahaven and venturing into the unknown means certain death.

Like all of us, he is held back by fear of failure, fear of what others will think, fear of the unknown. He is chained by both his attachment to comfort and the conditioned belief that seeking anything different is a dangerous idea.

As he starts to wake up to the nature of his existence, he experiences paranoia and loneliness because the people around him (paid actors) won’t acknowledge the truth of the world they live in.

Now, to be clear, I'm not saying that your family and friends are conspiring to keep you in a fake reality. Instead, I'm saying:

We too easily accept the narrative we’re given because it feels safe.

Everything from the messaging you see on TV and billboards, to what you get told in school, to the online echo-chamber that social media creates for you, to the opinions and beliefs of the people around you (even if well-meaning) all influence your perception of reality and direct you down the ‘safe’ path.

But ‘safe’ means the one that’s most predictable and easiest to control.

“Work hard in school, so you can get a job that pays you well enough to afford all the things you’re told you need to buy, and don’t worry about the rest.”

And what does it cost?

Time.

I’ve seen a lot of people trade far too much of their life for far more stuff than they could ever need.

How much longer do you want to spend your most valuable resources, your time, energy, and attention, chasing a life that doesn’t fulfil you?

Like Truman, there’s only one way to free yourself.

When Truman finally tries to escape, the producers unleash a storm to sink his boat. He doesn’t turn back. His boat capsizes. He nearly drowns. But when his hand finally touches the edge of the world, he finds the door. He looks into the camera, takes a bow, and walks through.

The only way out is through the storm, and out into the unknown.

Step through the door.

You don’t need to know where it will lead. You need to start walking and trust in your ability to figure it out - only then can you start living a life that you choose, rather than one that was assigned to you.

Work that excites you. Relationships built on truth, not performance. Days that feel like yours. That’s what’s waiting for you on the other side.

To your freedom,

Rob

Wild Minds Weekly: Worse is better
Hello friends, Most people don't have it bad enough. Let me explain. Most people hover just above unbearable. They accumulate chronic diseases but blunt the symptoms with pharmaceuticals so they can get by. They think the decline is just part of getting old. They don't have it bad enough. If their health was worse, they'd hit a state they couldn't accept. Then they'd have no choice but to chang...
Wild Minds Weekly: You were right, now what?
Hello friends, We'd all rather be wrong about where the world is heading, but on some level, it feels good. It feels validating to hear people start to take notice of the things you noticed a long time ago. But we're in danger. In danger of falling into the majority. Why isn't that a good thing? You're here because you think differently. You saw things others hadn't seen yet, and decided you wa...
Wild Minds Weekly: Why Your Community Will Fail
Hello friends,   It's frustrating when you're first starting. You have a deep understanding of why your project is important, but you can't understand why it's so difficult to get other people invested in it, why you keep running into problems with conflict amongst community members, and why people lose interest. So here's what you need to understand if you want your project and community to su...
