Wild Minds Weekly: Starting from Zero
Hello beautiful people,
One of the most famous artists of all time, Pablo Picasso, once said,
"I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it."
In English, that means, "Do things you suck at, so that one day you won't suck at them".
We have a natural tendency to shy away from things we're not immediately good at.
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to learn a martial art, but my fear of looking like a fool kept me safely in my comfort zone, competing in sports I already knew well. It wasn't until I turned 22 that I decided to shake this limiting mentality and started dabbling in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
It was humbling.
There aren't many things that bruise your ego more than getting choked out by a 5'6" lady (I am a 6'2" male).
Embracing the beginners mentality fully, I signed up for a tournament.
Truth be told, it was a brutal experience.
I was there without a coach to guide me, and my girlfriend had the joy of watching me get pinned on my back for both of my matches, which I lost.
Not fun.
You might be thinking, "This doesn't inspire me to try new things at all."
I would be thinking the same thing.
But the true value of the experience, like with any new challenge or project, is not the outcome. It is who you become on the journey to getting there, and that person can only be born if you take that first step.
My jiujitsu improved tremendously in the weeks leading up to the tournament. Even though I was disappointed by the outcome, I am a much better grappler now than when I started, which ultimately is the goal of any pursuit. Had I let fear hold me back, I would be sat here, years later, thinking "I'll start that one day.".
Each step into the unknown creates a ripple effect that could change your whole life.
Billy and Alfie didn't know anything about farming 4 years ago. Today, I would say they know more about regenerative farming and good animal husbandry than most people who've grown up in farming families. All because they were willing to adopt the beginners mentality when they set out to build One Tree Farm. They have built a fully functional, off-grid, regenerative farm that produces enough food to feed their families AND generate an income!
Your entire life will change the moment you embrace the embarrassment of being a beginner.
Don't be afraid to start from zero.
To your freedom and indpendence,
Rob
